April 21, 2004 - Baysox 1B/DH Mike Huggins is recovering in Bowie after undergoing an emergency appendectomy at St. Vincent’s Health Center in Erie, PA, Thursday.
Huggins, 23, first experienced pain after the Baysox doubleheader with Reading last Wednesday night. He was rushed to the hospital on Thursday morning, after making the trip to Erie, when the pain did not subside.
“[Huggins] is not one to complain and if he would’ve tried to play through the pain this could have been a lot more serious,” Baysox Athletic Trainer Mark Shires said. “I think early detection and proactive treatment was the key to the success of the procedure.
Seawolves team doctor, Dr. Bradley Fox, who diagnosed the appendicitis after an hour of tests, examined Huggins.
“[Erie] gave us great service. We were in the doctor’s office by [10 a.m.] had the CAT scan results by [11 a.m.] and had the surgery scheduled for [6:45 a.m.] all in the same day.”
Not able to give an exact date for Huggins’ return to the Baysox lineup, Shires mentioned the recovery process would be similar to that of Yankees’ OF Bernie Williams, who had his appendix taken out during spring training.
“We’re going to try to get him back as soon as possible with as much concern for his health as possible,” Shires said. “We’re looking for it to be three-or-four weeks, barring any complications, but he is a strong, young man, so we don’t expect any problems.
